“I have back pain. Do you know any good Chiropractors?”
We’ve actually had patients in our clinic ask us this question not knowing that they were in a facility that specializes in the treatment of back pain. What’s the difference between a physical therapist and a chiropractor? Which one should you go to for your back pain?
A Physical Therapist is trained in use of manipulation techniques just like a chiropractor. However, Physical Therapists are also trained in using exercise and movement to heal the body. Using a combination of all these techniques, a Physical Therapist can address why their patient is experiencing pain in the first place while educating them on how they can make changes to their lifestyle to prevent pain from returning in the future.
A chiropractor uses high velocity thrusts to make adjustments to the spinal column. While this may reduce your pain for a while, most chiropractors will do little to address why you have the pain to begin with and little to educate their patients on how to prevent the pain from returning in the future. Unfortunately, many chiropractors use this treatment model to create patients that are dependent on their care requiring them to return again and again for years without truly addressing the issue.
